A family-run Cheshire cheese maker has said it remains in a “strong financial position” despite experiencing “volatile trading conditions” during the Covid-19 pandemic.
JS Bailey, which is based in Calveley, has reported a turnover of £30.7m for the 12 months to September 30, 2020, down from £33.5m.
Its pre-tax profits also slipped from £1.2m to £1.1m over the same period.

JS Bailey’s brands include Calveley Mill, Chef’s Blend and Chef’s Pizza Blend as well as Kerrymaid and Bespoke Grated.
The business was founded in 1984 by John Bailey and was originally based in Nantwich.

A statement signed off by the board said: “The company experienced volatile trading conditions throughout the financial year.
“Sales volumes were lower during the second half of the financial year due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the food service sector.

“In addition market price fluctuations of cheese continued to be volatile during the year.
“The company continued with its programme of capital expenditure during and after the end of the financial year having increased the number of grating lines and increased its storage production facilitates.
